 Situated
in the Bazaruto Archipelago of islands, on the south eastern
border of Southern Africa. (Mozambique borders South Africa,
Zimbabwe, Malawi and Tanzania, and has 2000 kilometres of pristine
coast line.)
Benguerra
is approximately 11 kms by 5 kms, and the forest, savannah and
wetland eco-systems sustain a diverse population of fauna and
flora on the island, which was declared a National Park in 1971.
There are 3 fresh water lakes which host numerous birds as well as
crocodile.
The
main lodge is flanked by secluded chalets, built on stilts, with
woven reed walls, wooden floors and thatched roofs. The 13 chalets
are 10-15 metres apart and all have views overlooking the beach
and sea. They are all double rooms (5 double beds and the rest are
twin bedded) with an en-suite bathroom with shower. A verandah/balcony
overlooks the sea. The chalets are built in an indigenous Acacia
and Natal Mahogany forest 20 metres from the sea. The lounge /
dining room / bar area is separate, with a large airy patio
overlooking the beach and sea across lawns and trees where
attractive red tailed squirrels play. The Lodge boasts a new
addition of a swimming pool (2004).
